What to know
About xAI
xAI was founded by Elon Musk in 2023 and grew into the company behind the Grok family of AI models. The business was based in Palo Alto, California, with additional operations in locations including Memphis, Austin, New York, Seattle and London. Its work combined AI research, consumer products and the large-scale human feedback needed to train and evaluate its models.
SpaceX announced on February 2, 2026 that it had acquired xAI. The combined organization now presents current roles under the SpaceXAI name.
AI data training work at xAI
xAI built a sizeable human-data team to help improve Grok. AI tutors created examples of strong answers, compared model responses, checked facts, explained errors and applied detailed scoring rules. The company also recruited specialists in software engineering, mathematics, medicine, biology, physics, finance, law, languages, audio and video. These roles were more involved than simple image labeling: you were expected to use judgment, write clearly and explain why an answer was correct or weak.
The same kind of work continues in the combined organization. The combined SpaceXAI organization continues to recruit remote AI tutors across languages and expert subjects when projects require that expertise. Availability changes quickly, so a subject that is listed today may close once a project has enough people.
What is it like to work at xAI?
Historical xAI tutor vacancies included both temporary employee and contract-style arrangements, depending on the role and country. Many human-data jobs were remote, but each listing set its own geographical eligibility. Remote did not automatically mean worldwide: some positions were limited to particular countries or required you to work from an approved location.
Hours, contract length and pay also varied by vacancy. Some postings described fixed weekly schedules or temporary assignments, while others offered more flexible working patterns. There was no single reliable rate for every xAI tutor, making the specific current listing the best reference for compensation and employment terms.
Project demand could change sharply. In September 2025, TechCrunch reported xAI had cut at least 500 generalist tutor roles while shifting recruitment towards specialist expertise. That history is a useful reminder that passing an assessment or joining a human-data team does not guarantee permanent work. The current listing and contract are the best references for assignment length, termination terms and whether any later work is available.
Application process at xAI
Current applications are handled under the combined SpaceXAI brand rather than a separate legacy xAI marketplace. A current tutor application normally asks for a CV, location and evidence of relevant language, academic or professional expertise.
The official careers process says applications are reviewed by the company team, followed by a screening conversation and role-specific interviews where appropriate. Tutor vacancies can also include a written or practical assessment that tests whether you can follow instructions, evaluate AI output and explain your reasoning. The exact stages and time commitment depend on the position. Passing an assessment moves you forward for that vacancy; it is not a promise of unrelated future projects.
