What to know

About Outlier

Outlier is an AI training platform created by Scale AI in 2023 and operated for contributors by Smart Ecosystem, Inc. It connects human experts with projects that use examples, comparisons and feedback to improve large language models and other generative AI systems.

Through Outlier, companies can turn human knowledge into training data. Contributors test model responses, create challenging examples and help AI systems become more accurate, useful and safe. Scale AI created the platform as demand grew for specialist knowledge across nearly every academic and professional field.

AI data training work at Outlier

Outlier recruits generalist writers, multilingual contributors and specialists in areas such as mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, law, finance, economics and the humanities. Some opportunities are suitable for students or college graduates, while specialist roles may require professional experience, a master’s degree or a PhD.

Your tasks depend on the project. Common assignments include writing prompts, comparing and ranking AI answers, checking factual accuracy, correcting faulty reasoning and creating scoring rubrics. Coding projects can involve reviewing generated code, debugging AI-agent traces or testing whether an agent can complete a multi-step workflow. Language projects ask native or fluent speakers to assess grammar, tone, cultural relevance and natural phrasing. Outlier also runs image, video and speech projects, so the work is no longer limited to text-based chatbots.

What is it like to work at Outlier?

You work as an independent contractor or freelancer, not as an Outlier employee. As an independent contractor, you handle your own taxes and other legal obligations. The work is remote, but that does not mean every opportunity is available everywhere. Outlier accepts registrations only from supported locations, and each project may restrict eligibility to particular countries, states or regions.

Schedules are generally flexible. Outlier says many contributors work around five to 10 hours per week, with some opportunities allowing up to 40 hours. Other listings advertise no minimum commitment. Project lengths vary according to customer demand, and Outlier does not publish a standard duration.

Passing the application process does not guarantee continuous work. Your verified skills make you eligible for matching projects, but availability can rise and fall. You may finish one project and receive another invitation, remain in the marketplace without an active assignment or experience periods with no tasks. Outlier’s own onboarding guide says business demand “ebbs and flows.” This makes the platform better suited to flexible or supplementary income than income you must receive at a fixed level each month.

Pay varies considerably by expertise, task type and location. Outlier says its typical hourly range is $10 to $50, but individual listings can fall outside it. Recent official listings have advertised up to $20 per hour for Italian-language work, $50 for an AI-agent coding project and $150 for quantitative-finance experts. These are maximum advertised rates, not guaranteed earnings. You see the applicable tasking rate before starting a project. Payments for completed work are processed weekly on Tuesdays through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.

Recent developments and media coverage

An April 2026 Guardian investigation reported that some Outlier taskers encountered disturbing media and assignments involving public social-media images, copyrighted work and detailed activity tracking. Scale AI told the newspaper that contributors could stop uncomfortable tasks, that it shut down flagged inappropriate work and that its time-tracking tool was used to support accurate payment rather than active monitoring. The report is a reminder that “AI training” can include sensitive collection or moderation work beyond the expert reasoning tasks highlighted in recruitment material.

Application process at Outlier

To apply, you create an account and provide a valid ID, a phone number from your country of residence, a current resume and a LinkedIn profile. Outlier then asks you to select relevant skills and complete screenings, which may include brief video responses or subject-specific questions. Identity verification is handled through Persona.

Outlier estimates that profile setup takes 10 to 15 minutes, skill selection and screening takes 15 to 30 minutes, and ID verification takes five to 10 minutes, although processing can take one or two days. Project-specific onboarding, training or assessments may follow after approval. There is too little public information to say that every screening or onboarding activity is paid, so check the terms shown for the opportunity before beginning.

After passing, your verified profile enters Outlier’s marketplace and you can be matched with suitable projects. You may still need to complete project-specific assessments before paid tasks appear.

Easy tasks but highly inconsistent task availability

The tasks on the platform are pretty easy to complete and straightforward. However, the work is highly inconsistent. Some days there are no tasks available at all, and other days there are only a few. It would be a much better experience if the workflow was steady.

Worked with Outlier: May 2025–January 2026

My experience with Outlier was very love/hate at times, but in the end, the negative overtook the positive. PROS -I always got paid on time. Every cent I earned was available to me when I expected it. -I loved that it is so easy to track your pay and know exactly what to expect and when it will hit your bank account. -I also like their Oracle status, and once an Oracle, I was never without work there. In this sense, Outlier did reward consistent high quality, which is a good thing. Oracle status used to come with weekly milestone bonus incentives and no longer does. They removed that perk. But Oracle status did afford me consistent work, usually 2-3 projects in my queue at a time. (I will talk more about the negatives of their queue a bit later). -I also liked that once I was added to a squad on a project, I got to stay with that squad (and the same project team) across many projects. I don’t know if this is a typical Outlier experience, but it was mine. -It took a few projects before I was ever promoted to reviewer, but once was promoted to reviewer on one, I was usually promoted quickly on subsequent projects. -I have worked in some projects that had “war rooms” where you can receive real time, live help. That is always appreciated. CONS -Pay rate is usually based on the “skills” you have recognized on their platform. Whatever “skill” they apply to each particular project determines your pay rate. The generalist “skill” is usually among the lowest paying, and more specialized ones pay higher. Outlier makes it very difficult to obtain new “skills” as you go. There are many recognized, higher-paying “skills” that are unpublished, and the only way you can test for them is to be invited. This means many very capable contractors are offered only low paying work. -I cannot express how much I detest their unpaid onboarding. Many exam questions are vague and conflicting with guidelines. Or the guidelines are incomplete in comparison to the exams. I once failed a project exam that dealt with very easy material directly tied to my doctoral degree because it was auto graded, and the terminology I used did not exactly fit their very basic keywords input in the auto grader. -They prioritize you on projects, meaning you cannot work on any other project despite being offered others. They also “steal you” from a prioritized project to force you to work on one that is higher priority. I have gotten taken off higher paying projects where I was a senior reviewer and prioritized to projects that barely pay minimum wage. It is a difficult process to get this reversed. -Support is a joke. Even when you can get through to a real person, they only answer in canned responses. -Their meetings and office hours are unpaid, but often mandatory if you want to stay aligned. -Reviewers are not always aligned or vetted, and reviewer alignment can be very minimal. This varies from project to project, and some are better than others. However, it is not uncommon for people to get offboarded from a project for repeated low scores from an unaligned reviewer. (This issue in AI contract work is not exclusive to Outlier, but I have seen it on Outlier to a greater degree). -I have experienced pay cuts on projects, where they forced me to sign a new contract with lower pay to continue working (and reviewing) on projects I had invested a lot into. -I have spent hours of unpaid time onboarding projects that had already ended or are wrapping up/have no more work. Onboarding into ghost projects was the most frustrating thing I ever experienced on the platform. All in all, I don’t hate the company, and I have made a good deal of money with them all told (partly because I was relentless and lucky enough to find opportunities to obtain new “skills” to boost my pay rate), but all of the unnecessary frustration it took to do it drove me away to contract with other companies instead.
