Expert-led AI training work

What to know

About Alignerr

Alignerr is a global expert network that connects professionals with paid projects involving the training and evaluation of artificial intelligence. The platform is operated by Labelbox, a San Francisco-based company that provides tools and services for creating AI training data and testing how well AI systems perform.

Labelbox was founded in 2018 by Manu Sharma, Brian Rieger and Dan Rasmuson. Alignerr became publicly active as its expert network by 2024.

AI data training work at Alignerr

The work you do depends on the project. You may write prompt questions, create strong example answers, review AI-generated responses, check facts, compare two answers, label text, images or audio, or create scoring guides. A scoring guide, sometimes called a rubric, is simply a set of standards used to judge whether an answer is accurate, clear and useful.

Alignerr says its network covers more than 50 fields. Its job listings include projects for software engineers, researchers, accountants, finance specialists, marketers, customer support professionals, project managers and structural engineers. Some positions require a master’s degree, Ph.D. or substantial professional experience. Other general data-labeling roles mainly ask for attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions.

What is it like to work at Alignerr?

Most contributor opportunities are freelance or independent contractor roles. The work is remote and often completed independently. Many hourly listings advertise flexible commitments of 10 to 40 hours per week, while some assignments are paid per task or per accepted task. Individual roles may be limited to certain countries, regions or cities, so remote work does not always mean that every applicant worldwide is eligible.

Pay varies widely by subject and project. Current listings show ranges such as $20 to $50 per hour for some marketing and support work, $60 to $120 for finance and accounting projects, and $70 to $120 for software engineering tasks. Alignerr says certain specialist roles may pay up to $150 per hour. These are advertised ranges, not guaranteed earnings. Payments are arranged through Stripe Connect or PayPal depending on your location, and many listings advertise weekly payouts. Labelbox’s payment FAQ says that pay-per-accepted-task submissions are paid only after quality review and final acceptance; a completed task that is not accepted is not paid.

Alignerr's application process separates joining the expert community from being matched to an assignment. In practice, passing gives entry into a talent network, not a promise of immediate paid work. Your expertise, location, assessment results, availability and current client demand may all affect project access. Gaps between assignments are therefore possible.

Recent developments and media coverage

The scale of the network stands out. Labelbox currently says Alignerr includes more than 2.6 million contributors across over 200 fields and 40 countries. In February 2026, Labelbox also acquired Upcraft to improve how it recruits, engages and supports Alignerr experts.

Application process at Alignerr

You begin by signing in with Google, uploading your resume and reviewing the profile information created from it. You select your skills and interests, then apply to an opening that matches your background. Alignerr also verifies your phone number and identity through Persona, an identity-checking service that may ask you to photograph an official ID.

After approval, you complete a contractor agreement and set up payments through Stripe Connect or PayPal. You then receive onboarding materials for the Labelbox work platform and Discord, which Alignerr uses for resources, announcements and project updates. Even after onboarding, you may need to wait until a suitable project becomes available.

Worked with Alignerr: August–December 2025

A promising platform, poorly managed and plagued by payment issues

I worked on one of the data annotation projects at Alignerr back in 2025. Everything was smooth and promising in the beginning, with an expected longevity, sufficient work volume, supportive leads, and timely pay and bonuses. A week in, I was promoted to a reviewer role. Albeit the pay disparity between taskers and reviewers was extremely unjustified, it was still a good project to be part of. That was until every negative event started stacking up: delayed and miscalculated payments, unclear directives, and work availability abruptly stopping with less than 24 hours' notice. Not to mention, the support channels were neither helpful nor responsive, and there was a sense of suppression whenever people aired their sentiments or raised questions that weren't necessarily optimistic. The project eventually shut down without any proper closure, leaving people hanging. A similar pattern of mismanagement was also evident in the projects that followed, which made it difficult to see these issues as isolated incidents. I eventually left the platform with a huge unpaid balance, which was simply dismissed on the basis that their records showed no outstanding payment. For a platform that initially showed so much promise, the way projects and contributors were handled was extremely disappointing.

Run

The lack of transparency and low rate make this one of the worst companies if you're looking for a somewhat stable income. You go from not hearing from them in weeks to being randomly put in several empty projects in their Discord to finally being offered a couple of dollars for over half an hour of work. The different platforms you must use make the whole experience even more confusing and messy.

Lack of transparency

I was quickly onboarded to several projects, without even applying for these specific roles. They want you to join video webinars where they explain the project details. However, all my questions about the payment were ignored. Eventually it turned out the hourly rate would be way below what was stated, given the complexity of the tasks. I declined to work on the tasks. It honestly felt like a waste of my time.

A bit chaotic and underpaid

It was a while ago, but the projects I was put on were all pretty chaotic. I never received any feedback on my work, which left me feeling without direction. The onboarding assessments were unpaid and as the hourly rate was pretty low, I decided not to continue with the next projects they offered me.

What worked: Quick onboarding

What could improve: Paid onboarding assessments, better guidance from team leads, higher hourly rate.
