About Prolific
Prolific is a London-based online research and AI data platform founded in 2014 by Ekaterina Damer and Phelim Bradley while they were at the University of Oxford. It connects researchers and AI developers with verified participants who complete online studies and evaluation tasks.
Prolific is not a conventional job board or a promise of regular employment. You join as a participant and choose individual studies that appear on your dashboard. That makes it closer to a paid research marketplace, although some of its newer specialist AI tasks can resemble short freelance evaluation projects.
AI data training work at Prolific
Alongside academic surveys and behavioral research, Prolific hosts work used to train and test AI systems. Tasks include fact-checking, comparative reasoning, writing, coding, response ranking and red teaming.
General studies are matched through the information in your participant profile. Specialist AI projects may recruit people with experience in programming, mathematics, science, medicine, law, creative writing or particular languages. Prolific’s AI tasker guidance lists the skills and task formats researchers can target.
What is it like to work at Prolific?
You work remotely through a web browser and decide which available studies to accept. Prolific participation is limited to people aged 18 or older who live in a supported country. Prolific currently supports many OECD countries, with some exclusions, and eligibility can change. Your country, demographics, language and profile answers determine which studies you can see.
There are no standard hours or guaranteed assignments. A study displays its estimated duration, reward and average hourly rate before you reserve a place. Some take only a few minutes; specialist or longitudinal projects can require longer sessions or multiple check-ins. Studies fill quickly, and quiet periods are possible because researchers decide who qualifies and when to launch.
Prolific requires researchers to pay at least £6 or $8 per hour and recommends at least £9 or $12 per hour. Those are platform minimums and recommendations, not a guarantee that every minute you spend on screening or waiting is paid. Approved balances can be cashed out to PayPal once you reach £6 or $6. A researcher normally has up to 22 days to approve a completed submission before Prolific automatically approves it, subject to the platform’s rules.
You are a study participant, not a Prolific employee. You can return a task you no longer want to complete, but a rejected submission may not be paid. It is worth reading the description, device requirements and attention-check rules before starting.
Recent developments and media coverage
Prolific’s June 2026 AI Task Builder update lets researchers collect and quality-check images, audio and video directly in the platform, including image annotation, egocentric video, speech samples and structured evaluation of generated media. This broadens the AI work beyond text-based studies and model-response evaluation.
Recent research
Prolific AI Research’s HUMAINE project has now collected more than 100,000 human comparisons of AI systems. Participants compare anonymized models on task performance, communication, interaction quality and trust. The project is a useful public example of how individual study responses can become large-scale, demographically aware model evaluations and leaderboards.
Application process at Prolific
The official participant guide starts with a waitlist. An invitation is not necessarily immediate; Prolific balances its participant pool according to current research demand. When invited, you create an account, verify your email, phone number and identity, and complete the “About You” profile. Verification helps researchers rely on genuine, unique participants.
There is normally no job interview. After approval, eligible studies appear on your dashboard. Specialist AI projects may add a paid screener, qualification study or longitudinal commitment, and passing one does not guarantee a follow-on queue. Keep the “About You” profile accurate and use only one account, because identity and profile matching are part of Prolific’s participant-quality controls.
