About Mercor
Mercor is a San Francisco AI data company founded in January 2023 by Brendan Foody, Adarsh Hiremath and Surya Midha. It began as an AI-powered recruiting platform, then shifted toward connecting skilled professionals with AI developers.
According to Mercor’s mission page, "Mercor is organizing human intelligence to power the AI economy."
AI data training work at Mercor
Mercor recruits doctors, lawyers, engineers, finance professionals, consultants, scientists, writers, creators, operators, hobbyists and multilingual specialists. Its expert marketplace says you may review model outputs, create examples that demonstrate expert reasoning and judge quality against clear standards.
Tasks vary. You might compare AI answers, fact-check claims, score work against a rubric, write structured feedback or design realistic professional tasks. Specialist projects can involve reviewing documents, spreadsheets and slide decks, creating difficult prompts, producing ideal answers or testing models for bias and security weaknesses. Some roles demand several years of professional experience or an advanced degree. Others focus on critical reading, writing quality or native-language fluency. Prior AI experience is not always required.
What is it like to work at Mercor?
Most opportunities are hourly independent-contractor assignments, not employee jobs. Many are fully remote and flexible, but location restrictions differ. A current legal role, for example, is limited to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, while a Tamil-language role is global. Contributors must satisfy the listing’s work-authorization rules and be legally allowed to freelance where you live.
Projects generally last weeks to months. Workloads vary: one equity-research listing requires at least 10 hours a week for four weeks, while a finance talent network describes typical commitments of 15–30 hours. Projects may be extended, shortened, paused or ended early. Joining a talent network only makes you eligible for matching as work becomes available. Mercor’s project FAQ says transitions are not automatic, so gaps are possible.
Hourly contracts are the most common. Time is usually recorded through Insightful, with weekly U.S.-dollar payments through Stripe or Wise. Verified listing rates vary sharply: recent examples include $15–$20 an hour for Tamil generalist work, $100–$150 for legal experts and $150–$220 for senior management consultants.
Recent developments and media coverage
In July 2026 Mercor announced it would acquire Deeptune, whose software recreates enterprise tools as reinforcement-learning environments. Mercor says its experts already write the tasks and verifiers used in those environments, a sign that some future work will model complete professional workflows rather than score isolated answers.
Mercor also disclosed a March 2026 supply-chain security incident involving a compromised LiteLLM package. The company said sensitive information for a very limited subset of its nearly five million experts was affected, found no evidence of fraudulent use and notified affected people on June 25–26 with identity-protection support. This is relevant context for applicants who provide identity, tax and payment information during onboarding.
Application process at Mercor
You usually create a profile, choose a listing, upload your résumé, confirm work authorization and complete any required AI interview or written assessment. Mercor’s application guide says the steps vary by role. Completed interviews and assessments can be reused across compatible applications and do not expire.
The AI interview requires a desktop, camera and microphone. Questions adapt to your background, and you can usually retake an interview up to three times. Interviews take roughly 15 to 25 minutes, while technical roles may add an assessment or paid work trial.
After submission, Mercor reviews your profile for project matching. Passing can qualify you for future opportunities or an instant offer, but it does not guarantee work. If you receive an offer, onboarding may include identity verification, a background check, contracts, confidentiality documents, tax forms, Insightful installation and Stripe or Wise setup.
